NEWS: Okonjo-Iweala's Nomination as DG of World Trade Organization accepted

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has accepted the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as one of the candidates for the office of the director-general of the organisation. “Nigeria, on 9 June 2020, nominated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Roberto Azevêdo, who has announced he will step down on 31 August 2020,” the organisation said  When President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) top job, Egypt went on the offensive. Egypt argued that the executive decision of the African Union (AU) which had set a deadline of November 30, 2019 for African countries to nominate candidates had been violated. They claimed Iweala’s nomination was late and should not be recognised. The WTO however said on Tuesday that nominations are still open till July 8, 2020.

The federal government has lifted the ban on religious gatherings across the country. The government had imposed the ban two months ago to check the spread of coronavirus. But at the briefing of the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation and chairman of the PTF, announced that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the relaxation of the ban for four weeks. “The PTF submitted its recommendations and the PRESIDENT has approved the following for implementation over the next four weeks spanning 2nd – 29th June 2020, subject to review-: “Cautious advance into the Second Phase of the national response to COVID-19; application of science and data to guide the targeting of areas of on-going high transmission of COVID-19 in the country; “Mobilisation of all resources at State and Local Government levels to create public awareness on COVID 19 and improve compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions within communities

COVID-19: Nigerians react as NCDC records the highest number of coronavirus cases today.

Nigerians blast Federal Government after Nigeria recorded 553 more COVID-19 cases on Saturday, which is the highest numbersingle-day. NCDC released the numbers on their official Twitter account which takes the country’s total infections to 9,855 few numbers from reaching 10,000, out of which 2856 have been discharged with 273 losing their lives due to the virus. Lagos continued to be the epicentre of the disease as they recorded the highest number yet again. "553 new cases of #COVID19; Lagos-378, FCT-52, Delta-23, Edo-22, Rivers-14, Ogun-13, Kaduna-12, Kano-9, Borno-7, Katsina-6, Jigawa-5, Oyo-5, Yobe-3, Plateau-3, Osun-1," NCDC stated on their Twitter page. "9855 cases of #COVID19Nigeria, Discharged: 2856, Deaths: 273." Some Nigerians believed the Government are not being real with the numbers they released.

COVID-19: Another batch of Nigerians return from china

The Federal Government has disclosed that another batch of Nigerian evacuees arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport from China on Saturday, swelling the number of  Nigerians that have so far returned home from different parts of the world following the the Covid-19 pandemic. Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama made this known on Saturday through his verified Twitter handle @GeoffreyOnyeama, adding that all the evacuees will go on the 14-day quarantine stipulated by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC). The Federal Government has continued to evacuate about 4,000 Nigerians that have indicated interest to return home from different parts of the world.  The government has so far repatriated over 1,000 Nigerians stranded in parts of the world. COVID-19: Ogun state government relaxes lockdown to be effected as from 1st of June

To the relief of residents of Ogun State, Gov Dapo Abiodun on Thursday night said that the eight weeks partial lockdown of the state as part of measures adopted to curb Covid-19 pandemic will now only hold on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays precisely. Gov Abiodun stated that the implication of this is that while the residents of the state could before now only transact businesses on three days of the week, that is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 am to 5pm, they are now to run their business activities unhindered from Monday to Friday with exception of Saturdays and Sundays beginning from Monday June 1st. The governor said that the presidential directive of curfew beginning from 8 pm still subsisted while further arrangement on opening of places of worship was still being fine-tuned. Abiodun said people must however not considered the further easing of the lockdown to mean that the worst about COVID-19 was over or that the curve of the spread had been flattened as all available data

NEWS: FG begins process to employ 774,000 nigerians

The federal government has kicked off the employment process of 774,000 Nigerians in a Special Public Works programme recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, on Thursday, convened a press briefing to update prospective candidates on the criteria that would determine the selection of persons. At the ongoing briefing which began at about 11 a.m. at the federal secretariat, Abuja, Keyamo would also explain how the federal government intends to execute the programme. President Buhari had approved the initiative to help cushion the effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Nigerians. The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, had announced in April that the president had approved N60 billion for allowances and operational cost for the initiative. Ahmed had said 1,000 Nigerians would be engaged from each of the 774 local government areas in the country.
